Clipper Mill Pool Party/Farmstead Grill

Updated: Monday, June 16 2014, 11:43 AM EDT
Friday night brought out the crowds for the annual Clipper Mill Pool season kick-off bash. The pool itself was accessorized with lots of floating yellow rubber ducks of all sizes, including one more than six feet tall! While some guests frolicked in the water, others sampled the delicious cuisine from chef Spike Gjerde of Woodberry Kitchen. The menu included juicy grilled burgers, honey-sweet fried chicken and perfect potato salad. While there, I mingled with guests, including Jim Halle, Amy Gjerde, Jon Kaplan, Stacy Swann, Denis Nash, Diron Insley, Andrea Naughton, Baron Scarlett and Rosalie Parker. While the weather remained pleasant for the first few hours of the party, a sudden downpour after 9 o'clock sent guests under the cover of the surrounding tents to endure the brief shower. The DJ took this a cue to spin Eddie Rabbit's "I Love a Rainy Night," and following the rain, many guests adjourned to the nearby Blue Pit BBQ just up the street to continue their merry-making.
The following evening, I joined a few friends to check out the brand-new Farmstead Grill, located in the new Shops at Canton Crossing. We were greeted by developer Michael Morris, who showed us around. The soaring interior space has a fresh, farmhouse-chic feel about it, with a large, open main dining room, an adjoining bar space, and additional seating upstairs in an overhead loft. This was the final preview night at the restaurant before it opened to the public the following day, and the staff was bustling to perfect the service. Also checking out the new spot this night were local food writers Julekha Dash and Dara Bunjon, along with her husband, Tom. Chef Galen Sampson did not disappoint with his seasonal farm-to-table cuisine. Everything we ordered, including roast chicken, grilled oysters, steak, asparagus and kale salad, was perfectly on-point. Desserts were delish-- key lime pie, blueberry cobbler and chocolate pot-de-creme-- all satisfying.
