Great Chefs' Dinner

Updated: Tuesday, April 23 2013, 05:19 PM EDT

This year's Great Chefs' Dinner to benefit The Family Tree took place last night at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley. Strolling through the silent auction during the cocktail hour (with my BidPal iTouch in hand) I had a chance to chat with Ed St. John, Jon Levinson, Joe Sheppard & Rita St. Clair, Ross & Sandra Flax and Amy Newhall. At 7:30, everyone filed into the grand ballroom, where 40 tables were lavishly decorated by local designers to reflect the Southern theme. Guest celebrity chef John Besh was in town from his native New Orleans to oversee the evening's four-course dinner (a salad of goat's milk cheese with heirloom beets, ham and petite herbs, cauliflower soup with crabmeat, a "faux filet" of Waygu beef shortribs with wild mushrooms and a spring pea pistou, and dessert of chocolate hazelnut budino). Our rollicking table included David and Jody Berg, as well as local scribe Rafael Alvarez and Phoebe Stein Davis of the Maryland Humanities Council. During the live auction, Ed St. John had a winning bid of $30K for the evening's most prized item: dinner at the Duke of Edinburgh's World Fellowship Dinner at Buckingham Palace. More mingling took place during the dinner break, and I encountered Justin and Jeremy Batoff, J.M. Shapiro, Sandy Glover and Toby Bozzuto in the buzzing crowd.Great Chefs' Dinner
