Hunt Cup/Cross Street Festival

Updated: Monday, April 29 2013, 12:13 PM EDT

One could not have asked for a more picture-perfect day for Hunt Cup on Saturday. Joining up with friends, we embarked with a four-car caravan to the Patron lot off of Tufton Road and proceeded to set up our tailgating spread for the afternoon. Guests included Eleanor & Peter Landauer, Dan & Mary Helfrich, Patrick Sutton & Tracy Kwiatkowski, Avery Strachan and A.T. Ward. Our Hunt Cup menu included Oriental chicken salad, marinated shrimp, asparagus and pork tenderloin, with Hunt Cup cake (Julia Calhoun's recipe) with strawberries for dessert. I mixed up a batch of Pimm's Cups and the picnicing was underway. Bourbon was the other popular libation at our little spread, with bottles of Basil Hayden's, Woodford Reserve and High West Rye being depleted by the end of the afternoon. Roaming through the fields, we visited with Doug & Catherine Hoffberger, Dean Alexander & Donna Schaefer, David & Sue Schleider, and Sam & Carter Polakoff. After departing the finish line, we headed back to our cars and stayed until they cleared the fields at close to 6 o'clock. Another fine day at Hunt Cup.

On Sunday, I headed down to Federal Hill for the annual Cross Street Festival, the first city street festival of the summer season. Joining up with Christian & Lacey Johansson, Tom Brinkley, Denis Nash, Kevin Horten, Patrick Murrow and Stacey Swann, we stayed outside in the street listening to bands before darting into The Abbey Burger Bistro when some stray raindrops hit. Lots of faces in the crowd: Lou Licata, Patrick Byrne, Brock Engle, John Packett, Linda McFaul, Kelsey Haywood and Bill Romani.
