Reopened Valley Inn

Updated: Friday, February 28 2014, 10:38 AM EST

Last night, a few friends and I trekked out Falls Road to check out the newly reopened Valley Inn. I'd heard good buzz from people the past few weeks, and sure enough, when we pulled into the parking lot at 7:30, it was packed with cars (and that's a big lot). Inside, the tavern room was standing-room only, and the wait for a table reservation in one of the dining rooms was long. We adjourned to the bar and proceeded to have a great time. The whole place has been given a freshening-up and a polish. In the tavern room, the open floor space has been given over to high-top tables, and the crowds were three-deep at the bar. The menu is a reliable recitation of upscale comfort food (meatloaf, roast chicken, crab cake, etc.) and proved so popular that the kitchen was running out of items by 9 p.m. I enjoyed the roast chicken with my dining companion, Anne Boone Simanski, and throughout the evening ran into friends from all over, including Mike Fishman, Sharon Bass, Aubrey Good, Dr. Kim Hammond & his wife Carole, and Alan Charles. Owner Ted Bauer, who also operates The Oregon Grille, has done a great job of dusting off this old-school classic, and, given the buzzing crowds, it's definitely a hit.
