Product downsizing – a business putting less in the packaging but charging the same price - is a fairly regular practice which most consumers may not even notice.
Edgar Dworsky, founder of Consumer World, an online public service consumer resource guide, has been following the trend for more than 20 years.
Paper products, cereal, candy bars, tuna, ice cream, cereal – the downsizing happens across many different varieties of consumer goods.
Frito Lay, which recently downsized one of their products said, "We periodically adjust the sizes of the snack packages we offer, based on things like rising costs of commodities, energy, production and distribution."
The practice is legal – so long as manufacturers clearly display the weight of their product on the front of the package.
