TRAVEL-DISRUPTING SNOW POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY

A coastal storm will ride to our east, throwing moisture into building cold air overhead Wednesday. This means rain and snow mix developing for the entire area Tuesday night and for a very busy travel day on Wednesday. By the time it tapers late Wednesday, we could see up to three inches of snow here in the city, and maybe even up to four inches or so in places like Carroll County.

Derby Day Party

Updated: Monday, May 6 2013, 02:51 PM EDT

"Big Joe" Alvarina is known for three things: his dog Luther, his awesome homemade potato salad (hint: it contains bacon), and his annual Kentucky Derby party, held at his pad in Otterbein/Federal Hill. Every year, 50 or 60 invitees don their Derby Best to sip champagne and cocktails, mingle on the patio while eating freshly shucked oysters, place informal bets and watch the Run for the Roses. This year was no different: many of the ladies in hats, gents in seersucker-- all enjoying the sunshine (though it was a sloppy, wet mess at Churchill Downs). This crowd enjoys horseracing, and uses this event as an informal run-up to the next phase of the Triple Crown, Baltimore's own Preakness Stakes. Among those in the crowd enjoying the afternoon: Hollin Hinkle, Steve Leary, Tanzi Craig, Lisa Poland, Patrick Sutton, Tracy Kwiatkowski, Denis Nash, Stacey Swann, Chuck Bell, Lou Licata, Colette Went, Tom & Brianne Brinkley, Nick Zupancic, Chuck Gardner, Frank Leibman, Sarah Schmidt, Abber Knott, Brock Engle, Kevin Horten, and a slew of others. Most of this crew will be seen again in two weeks, helping to fill the grandstands at Pimlico Race Course. Cheers to Orb!
