HORSES HELP HEROES | Connecting 'retired' horses with veterans in need

BOWIE, Md. (WBFF) - There's a special place off of Hillmeade Road in Bowie, where retired racehorse Nadiya and more than a dozen other horses can live out their golden years - at a purple barn.

A lot of fresh connections are made here.

The guests at The Big Purple Barn are all recovering military veterans from Walter Reed Medical Center.

The horses help them.

While some injuries are visible, some are autoimmune diseases that are "felt."

The program is called Horses Help Heroes.

It's only been about a year, but it's already connected 100 veterans with equine therapy, a special connection for the volunteers, too.

The Big Purple Barn donates its space and its staff.

It's a horse sanctuary

The union at this special place is built on a mutual connection.

Recovery is hard, and the horses know it.

But they're getting through it - together.
