Crackdown On Neighborhood Liquor Stores & Violence

Updated: Monday, February 11 2013, 10:27 PM EST
Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot is convinced the high density of neighborhood liquor stores is contributing to violence.

By eliminating non-conforming liquor stores Barbot expects violent crime in the surrounding areas to drop. In the 1970's, Baltimore banned the sale of alcohol in residential areas.

Almost a hundred corner stores were grandfathered in under the new zoning rules. With new rules being proposed, those would be all but eliminated.  Many business owners are threatening to sue.

Instead of a blanket policy, one North Baltimore business owner wants stores reviewed individually.   Crackdown On Neighborhood Liquor Stores & Violence
