A dangerous new diet trend is spreading among teens. YouTube videos are popping up of young girls eating cotton balls, and this dangerous method of losing weight is spreading around social media.
In the videos, the girls drench the cotton balls in a liquid before eating, in a bid to trick their bodies into feeling full, without the calories. However, the health risks for eating cotton balls are quite lengthy.
Marta Wright is a dietician with the Kettering Health Network. She says this diet can lead to many health problems, among them digestive issues and malnutrition.
"They're not getting nutrients, potentially setting themselves up for malnutrition," Wright said.
Wright says it's also a diet that some models are using, adding that some believe cotton balls have fiber - even though it is the wrong kind. The diet, Wright says, will eventually put a person's body into starvation mode.
