In this tough economy, and the fact that just about everything has gone up in price, more and more consumers have turned to dollar stores to save a buck.
Consumer Report's Shop Smart recently surveyed 1500 women and found about 75 percent of them are shopping at dollar stores more than they used to.
But is the quality of those brands the same? Consumer Report's cannot say because it did not test the quality of dollar store products.
Product safety experts say watch out for electrical products without UL labels or with fake ones vouching for their safety. Items in those boxes could be closeout items and should be avoided. Experts also recommend avoiding off brand vitamins at any cost.
Cheryl Thomas has been shopping at dollar stores for more than ten years, but even she admits to avoiding buying anything electrical.
Experts say it's not so much at the big dollar store chains like Dollar General, Family Dollar or Dollar Tree where you need to watch out for this, but more so at the knock off dollars stores.
It is estimated that consumers can save as much as 38 percent of brand name items purchased at one of the big chain dollar stores. As for the quality of the items you are buying, experts say when you look at the bottom line; it's a relatively cheap experiment that could have big payoffs.
