Free Cell Phone Program in Dire Need of Reform

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:11 PM EDT

An ongoing Fox45 Waste Watch investigation led straight to the halls of Congress. The problems with a federal program that gives away free cell phones - Lifeline - have proven difficult to fix.

The costs of the program that offers free phones to people already on federal assistance funded by a charge on your cell phone has quadrupled in cost in just four years from $800 million to $2.2 billion. Maryland was found to be one of the biggest abusers of the Lifeline program.

Last month promises were made at a hearing that an overhaul is in the works.
