Young, Gifted and Black at Bluford Drew Jemison Academy

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:12 PM EDT
In West Baltimore, hundreds of scholars strive to succeed by overcoming obstacles and exceeding expectations.

In one of Baltimore's toughest neighborhoods - at Bluford Drew Jemison Science Technology Engineering Academy - boys are made into men. The group of academically talented teens are beating the odds  as young, gift and black.

The 300 scholars start the day with a pledge to succeed and wear their ties and jackets as a badge of honor.

Dr. Anne Emery is chairman of the board and says the students understand that they must study and put academics first.

Dr. Audrey Freeman, the school principal, explains to Fox45 that being young, gifted and black means, " To move them from where they are to another level."

"So to be young, gifted, and black today is an asset. There are opportunities for you, the only thing we have to do is teach our scholars to be ready to accept those opportunities," Freeman said.

The school will graduate its first class in 2014. Young, Gifted and Black at Bluford Drew Jemison Academy
