Classes Resume at Baltimore City's Police Academy

Updated: Wednesday, February 20 2013, 07:51 PM EST
Recruits returned to the classroom today at Baltimore City's police academy.

Operations were halted last week, following the shooting of a trainee by an instructor.

Commissioner Anthony Batts admitted that protocol was not followed last Tuesday. Batts made the admission as he introduced the new academy commander and new deputy commissioner of professional standards and accountability.

During the briefing, Batts referenced how officers risk safety when they look at training as "playtime" or their guns as "toys". By Batts remarks, it appears as if there was a lack of supervision and specific protocol blatantly ignored during last week's off-site training exercise.

As for the recruit who was shot in the head, Batts visited the hospital last night.  He says the rookie is doing better than expected but is far from out of the woods just yet.

While the academy has re-opened, skill training remains suspended. Classes Resume at Baltimore City's Police Academy
