Gunman Who Shot City Officer Had Lengthy Record - Joy Lepola

Updated: Monday, November 19 2012, 09:25 AM EST
The suspect accused of shooting a Baltimore City police officer is an ex-convict with a lengthy criminal record.

Police say 30-year-old Franklin Gross opened fire on officers who approached him early Saturday on Calvert Street.

One officer was shot in the chest during the gun battle and is expected to recover.

But some legal experts are raising concerns that Gross was even out on the street, given his extensive criminal record.

Upon his release from prison two years ago, Gross was labeled dangerous and likely to re-offend under the state's violence prevention initiative.

Police expect to charge Gross with attempted murder after he's released from Shock Trauma.
