President Obama's Home State Gives Opinion on Affordable Care Act

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:14 PM EDT
As Americans continue to digest the Supreme Court ruling allowing Obama Care, in the president's home state, many saw these ideas a decade ago while Obama was serving at the Statehouse.

What does President Obama's home state think about the Affordable Care Act? Like most places, it depends on your party. State Representative Bill Mitchell, a Republican, has been at the Statehouse since 1999.  A few of those years being just a chamber away from then State Senator Barack Obama.

"It will be president Obama legacy. It will be a legacy of changing this country for the worse. We used to be the biggest creditor nation, now we are the biggest debtor nation. So, it's going to change the quality of life for every us citizen," said Mitchell.

Lt. Governor Shelia Simon, a democrat, has ties to the president. He supported her for Mayor of Carbondale. The late Paul Simon, Shelia's father, was an early supporter of Obama.

Andrew Hansen tells us the president's former colleagues say this could be Obama's legacy or downfall.

While Simon touts the president's health care law, other state officials are not buying it. Representative Mitchell, along with two other Republican State Representatives, have already filed legislation hoping to block implementation of the law's medicaid expansion, asking how can Illinois afford hundreds of thousands of more people on the medicaid rolls?

Mike Miller is a Political Science professor at the University of Illinois Springfield. He says president's are more concerned about their legacy in their second term.President Obama's Home State Gives Opinion on Affordable Care Act
