Preakness 2013 Taking Extra Security Measures Following Boston Bombing

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:17 PM EDT

The two most exciting minutes in sports at the Kentucky Derby were also some of the most secure, FOX45’s Janice Park discovered that heightened security measures following the Boston Bombings will be echoed at Pimlico Race Track.

It is an incredible undertaking to keep the more than 120 thousand people expected at the Preakness safe. Visitors can expect major changes, including getting wanded, along with a list of banned items including coolers, duffle bags, and backpacks.

With the 139th Kentucky Derby wrapped up, Baltimore’s Preakness is just around the corner. For over 140 years Preakness has become one of the largest sporting events in the United States.

Jockey Club President Tom Chuckas says starting on Blacked Eyed Susan Day, May 17th, there will be a noticeably significant increase in police.

Chuckas said, “I think you’ll notice police presence increase, canine unit, and behind the scene stuff that you won’t see to make sure people are safe and secure.”

Chuckas says there will be both plain clothes officers and regular officers at Preakness, but Chuckas says it’s what cannot be seen that will keep visitors safest.

Officials say there is no elevated threat, but just like at the Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2013, security will be bumped up. Patrons will be wanded, and all backpacks and coolers will be turned away at the door. The track has also banned camcorders and cameras with long lenses.
Pimlico officials hope it will be a minor inconvenience in exchange for major security.

“It’s a little bit of an inconvenience, because so many people bring coolers in but it’s good to prevent what happened here up in Boston,” said racing fan Laura Coscia.

Beverages of any kind, just like last year, are still banned form the infield.
