911 Calls Played at Start of James LaBoard Trial

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:18 PM EDT

A Baltimore County police officer accused of manslaughter sat and listened as the state began to build its case against him on Tuesday.

Before prosecutors called their first witness they played 911 calls from the night prosecutors say Officer James LaBoard killed 17-year-old Christopher Brown.

Late Tuesday afternoon the first officer to respond to the scene testified that Officer LaBoard admitted he had the teenager in a choke hold. Brown died of asphyxiation.

Prosecutors told jurors choke holds are prohibited.

LaBoard’s defense attorney maintains that his client did not intentionally kill Brown and that it was an accident. LaBoard has previously told investigators he heard a bang while inside his house and discovered that his front door had been vandalized. He says he saw several young men running from the scene.

The jury was selected on Monday and the trial is expected to wrap up on Friday.
