911 Tapes from Scene of Deadly Trench Collapse in Severn Released

Updated: Thursday, August 22 2013, 01:24 PM EDT

911 audio tapes from the scene of the trench collapse that killed one worker in Anne Arundel County on Monday have been released.

The 911 dispatcher can be heard telling the caller on the scene to stay away from the area of the collapse, as the caller told the dispatcher "they're trying to dig him out…you can see the top of his head."

The dispatcher told the caller, "Don't put anybody else in the hole please…we don't want this to be a trench rescue of two people."

The 26-year-old construction worker, identified as Armando Zuniga-Esquina of Silver Spring, was operating in a 7-foot-deep trench behind a residence on Leyton Lane in the Severn area when the dirt surrounding the trench suddenly began collapsing in on him. It took 45 personnel approximately three and a half hours to recover the victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The construction company had been constructing a deck at the residence. The incident happened around 10 a.m. on August 19.
