Committee Holds Closed Door Meeting with Top Prison Official

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:18 PM EDT

A key committee held a closed door meeting with the state’s top correction official earlier this week, a briefing which occurred while plans for a public hearing scheduled next week remain up in air.

At least six members of the state’s judiciary committee participated in a private meeting with Gary D Maynard the secretary of the state’s Public Safety division who briefed them on developments in a federal corruption case that has engulfed the state’s prison system in scandal.

Committee chairman John Vilario says the meeting was not open to the public

Several delegates who attended the private meeting say they have misgivings about conducting a briefing on the alleged corruption at the Baltimore detention center out a public view.

Committee chair Valerio scheduled a public hearing with Maynard for May 8th, a date that still stands.

State Delegate Jill P. Carter, who attended the briefing, said she believes “transparency is critical here” and believes the hearing should be an initial briefing followed by a series of hearings.
