Former Baltimore Boxing Champ Turns to Life of Crime

Updated: Tuesday, August 6 2013, 07:51 PM EDT

In 2007 FOX45 profiled James Berry, then 19, a Golden Gloves state and regional champion. Watch the video above for the archived package.

Though he once had a promising career in the boxing ring, Berry, today 25, has been charged with four murders and several attempted murders. The state's attorney announced the indictment on Monday.

Prosecutors say he was a leader in retaliatory killings involving a street gang known as the "D-Block" in Druid Heights.

On Tuesday FOX45 spoke to Berry’s former trainer at Umar Boxing Club.

"I didn't know anything about him leading a gang,” Marvin McDowell said. “I didn't even know anything about him being in a gang."

According to McDowell, Berry had a college scholarship to box at Northern Michigan State but funding for the program was temporarily pulled and Berry never went. He is currently in jail, awaiting trial.
