Lutherville school groundbreaking turns into protest scene

A Friday afternoon groundbreaking ceremony for the new Lutherville-area elementary school at Mays Chapel evolved into the scene of a protest.

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz and BCPS Superintendent Dr. S. Dallas Dance were heckled by a crowd protesting the loss of the park where the planned 94,000-square-foot school building will be built.

As the protesters chanted through the ceremony, an increasingly irate Kamenetz shouted at the disruptive crowd, "It's my turn to talk, your turn to listen!" Later, responding directly to a protester, he yelled, "Sir you've got a big mouth!"

The planned 700-seat school is designed to relieve overcrowding in the Lutherville and Timonium communities. It is slated to open for the 2014-2015 school year.
