Marathon Terrorists: "We are the Massachusetts Bombers"

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:18 PM EDT

A ranking member of the congressional intelligence committee says the suspected Boston Marathon bombers wanted to be caught, and that the terrorist duo may have decided to seek recognition by wreaking havoc after their pictures appeared in the media

In comments today shortly after he was briefed by the FBI, Maryland Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger says Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev told a victim they had carjacked early Friday morning they were responsible for the bombing.

“They told the person 'we are the Massachusetts bombers',” he said.

A senior member of the House Intelligence Committee, Ruppersberger said authorities believe the duo’s decision to rob a 7-11 with security cameras was another indication they were seeking  some form of  acknowledgement.

“They robbed a 7-11 where there were cameras,” he said. “So we assume at that point they want people to know they were out there, and they would want to be caught.”

Rupperbeger also revealed the suspected bombers used pipe bombs and explosives during their standoff with police.
