Obama to Impose Additional Sanctions Against Russian Officials [FULL PRESSER]

Updated: Thursday, March 27 2014, 04:20 PM EDT

Following Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, President Obama on Thursday announced he has signed an executive order that gives him the authority to impose sanctions not just on individuals, but on key sectors of the Russian economy.

He noted that he is moving to levy more sanctions against Russian officials and against a bank.

"Diplomacy between the US and Russia continues," Obama said. "We've emphasized that Russia still has a different path available, one that de-escalates the situation."

The president said that "the world is watching with grave concern," after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula this week. The West had warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that annexation violated international law.

"Ukrainians shouldn't have to choose between the west and Russia," Obama said Thursday.
