Police Investigating Fatal Scooter Collision in Elkridge

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:18 PM EDT

Howard County police are investigating a fatal Thursday morning collision of a woman on a TaoTao motorized scooter who was struck by a box truck in the westbound lane of Business Pkwy. in Elkridge. The accident closed Business Pkwy. in both directions.

The as-of-yet unidentified woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Through preliminary investigations police believe the driver of the scooter was traveling on Roosevelt Blvd. and pulled out onto Business Pkwy. without stopping at the stop sign.

Investigators do not believe the driver of the box truck - Travis Ashbury of Silver Spring - was speeding. At this stage police do not anticipate filing charges.

The driver of the scooter will be identified after next of kin has been notified of her death. Police noted that this type of motorized scooter is legal to drive on Maryland roadways.
