State Comptroller Questions Morgan State Food Service Contract Award

An initial 5-year, $35 million contract for food service at Morgan State University has been re-awarded to Thompson Hospitality Services. Two other companies had placed bids but didn't get far in the bidding process and State Comptroller Peter Franchot is crying foul.
"I hope there isn't any skullduggery from the outside," Franchot said. "The perception from the outside is the incumbent manipulated the process and got this sweetheart deal...How can you see otherwise?"
The two other bids were submitted by Metz Culinary Management and Sodexo. Morgan State rejected the Metz bid stating that it did not have the required number of minorities on the company payroll and that Metz did not seek a waiver for exemption to that rule. The college said it rejected Sodexo's bid because it did not meet the minimum evaluation requirement for company history and standards.
The new contract awarded to Thompson Hospitality means the company will provide all the food and catering on campus through May 2019.
In a statement from Morgan State, spokesman Clint Coleman said; "The process was valid, fair and carried out with integrity."
