Thousands gathered Monday to honor Sylvia 'Cookie' Harris, the wife of Congressman Andy Harris who died unexpectedly Thursday.
Among the attendees included family, friends, fellow volunteers and politicians at the memorial service held at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore.
Many shared fond memories of Sylvia Harris, who was known by loved ones as 'Cookie.'
She was an active partner in her husband's political career, a mother of five and grandmother of two, a devout Catholic and a community volunteer. One of her life's passions was working in the pro-life movement. She was very involved with many organizations including the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the St. Joseph Parish in Cockeysville, and the Maryland Right to Life.
"She will be remembered for all the work she did for the unborn at Maryland Right to Life at the crisis center," said former Maryland gubernatorial candidate and delegate to the United Nations Ellen Sauerbrey. "The nicest thing said today was that Cookie, when she walked in a room she was like an exuberant ray of sunshine and I think that's the way everybody will remember her. Always smiling, loving."
Delegate Kathy Szeliga also attended the service, "Cookie spent countless hours on the phone counseling women and caring for them, especially unplanned pregnancies and then helping them care for their babies when the babies were born."
Harris went into cardiac arrest at their home. Thursday evening, the office of Rep. Harris released the following statement, "Sylvia 'Cookie' Harris, beloved wife of over 30 years to Congressman Andy Harris, devoted mother of five and grandmother to two, and devout Catholic, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, August 28. The family is thankful for the thoughts and prayers that so many have offered already and appreciates privacy during this time."
On the Congressman's Facebook page, a request was placed, "The family prefers, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in the memory of Cookie Harris to the Pregnancy Center North, 6805 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21212 where she was a regular volunteer and board member."
