A tree collapse killed a 75-year-old grandfather attending a family gathering in Woodbine on Saturday afternoon.
Crews responded around 4:30 p.m. to the 2800 block of Daisy Road for reports of a man trapped under a tree.
Officials say the man was tending to a grill when the tree fell. A preliminary investigation reveals that the tree rotted and gave away.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three children (ages 9, 10, and 16) suffered from minor injuries during the incident. Two of the children were taken to Howard County General Hospital for treatment and released.
Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services resources, a chaplain from Howard County General Hospital, and members of the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center are assisting the family.
Officials say residents whose homes are within 'fall zone' of large trees should consult with a professional tree service to assess the health of surrounding trees.
