A Maryland State Trooper responded to a call in Queens Anne County shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday morning concerning a Pit bull mix attacking a woman.
The victim was identified as 64-year old Doris N. Airey of Centreville.
Trooper First Class Robert Isabelle arrived at the scene to find Airey breaking up a fight between two dogs. The pit bull mix had already bit Airey once. Isabelle first used pepper spray in an attempt to end the assault, which caused the dog to back away.
Only moments later, the dog aggressively charged towards Airey which caused Isabelle to discharge one round of his department-issued .40 caliber pistol which fatally wounded the dog.
It is believed both dogs involved in the fight lived at home with Airey. The pit bull mix belonged to her son-in-law who was not present at the time of the incident. The second dog presented no threat to Airey and was not injured. Airey sustained no further injury. The Queen Anne's County Animal Control has been notified of the incident.
