A Look Into New Scam Known as Ransomware

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:24 PM EDT
Ransomware is a new scam focused on kidnapping your computer data and hold it for ransom.

With dozens of complains each day, Ransomware has become so persuasive that the FBI has put out a warning.

Steve Merrifield is just one of the victims. After 27 years of business, he was preparing to sell his sporting goods shop until he realized all his computer data was frozen, including records for potential buyers.

Hackers had taken control of his computer and flashed a message stating that for $3,000, Merrifield could have his data back. But it did not stop there. He would have to fork over an additional thousand dollars for each week he did not comply.

The hackers used such sophisticated methods that it is virtually impossible to recover your data and the messages often look like they are from the government accusing users of things like child pornography.

Experts say most ransomware hackers are operating overseas so tracking them down is nearly impossible.
