Baltimore school budget proposes 300 layoffs
BALTIMORE (WBFF) - The Baltimore City Public Schools system is one step closer to laying off hundreds of employees.
The proposed budget released on Friday by superintendent Sonja Santelises calls for 300 layoffs, including as many as 75 teachers.
Most of those affected will be school administrators and support staff.
“These cuts are not without impact, but in light of where we are now, we are at least stabilizing,” said Santelises.
Earlier this year, the district warned that as many as 1,000 employees could lose their jobs.
Since then, an infusion of state and local funds helped fill the schools' $130 million budget hole, but the district remained $30 million short.
The school board is slated to vote on the proposed budget in two weeks.
