'Chaotic' scene reported with officer-involved shooting at Mondawmin TGI Friday's
BALTIMORE (WBFF) - A "chaotic" scene of gunfire played out at TGI Friday's at Mondawmin Mall Thursday night, with an off-duty Morgan State University police officer shooting someone, said Baltimore police Friday afternoon.
At about 11:30 p.m., a 23-year-old victim was shot outside the TGI Friday's restaurant at the shopping center in northwest Baltimore, reported police spokesperson T.J. Smith.
That victim got in a car with someone else and was taken to a local hospital, said Smith.
Customers started filing out, and another person decided to fire a gun in the air outside the restaurant, said Smith.
The Morgan State off-duty officer shot at the suspect who was firing shots. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Devin Martin, took off running. Martin was not struck.
Baltimore police arrived on scene, and they were able to help the off-duty officer take Martin into custody after a brief foot chase.
Martin is not believed to be responsible for the original shooting outside the restaurant. No one else was hurt in the incident; the 27-year-old was charged with a handgun violation, said Smith.
"You talk about a chaotic situation... The [off-duty Morgan State] officer acted to protect and preserve" the lives of the crowd, said Smith.
About the suspect in the officer-involved shooting, he said: "Why the heck would you go out and discharge your firearm after this scenario took place? That is just stupid."
"Luckily" the officer was there to end the scenario, added Smith.
