Democrat mayors win in Annapolis, Frederick
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) - Democrats celebrated in two Maryland mayoral races Tuesday evening.
The Democratic candidate in Annapolis, Gavin Buckley, defeated Republican incumbent Mike Pantelides.
He said in a tweet later that night: "I'm more than ready to serve as your Mayor after tonight, I couldn't have done it without every one of you!"
Reports also showed Democrat Michael O'Connor won in Frederick.
The Maryland Democratic Party also said in a statement: "Congratulations to our new Mayors-elect Michael O'Connor of Frederick and Gavin Buckley of Annapolis and our new Aldermen on their victories. They have the talent, determination, and commitment to public service to improve the lives of their constituents and help move our state forward."
The party said the victories "should be a warning to Governor Larry Hogan and the Maryland Republican Party that Marylanders are ready for fresh, bold leadership to move our state forward."
The victories follow in the wake of Democratic defeats over Republican candidates in Virginia and New Jersey.
New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio also won reelection.
