EXCLUSIVE: Mother of local attorney's stepson killed: "Put down the guns"

BALTIMORE (WBFF) - The local attorney’s stepson who was murdered outside a Baltimore gas station will be laid to rest Saturday.

Cody Young, 22, was shot and killed outside a BP on Garrison Boulevard on July 1. His case remains unsolved and a motive unclear.

On Friday, Fox 45 spoke with Young’s mother following a private family viewing at Wylie’s Funeral Home in Randallstown.

“Burying your child before burying yourself, it’s not supposed to happen like that,” said Donyelle Brown, Cody’s mother.

Holding back tears, she continued: “I would never want them [suspects] to be on this side of the table, burying their own child.”

Brown recalled the last phone conversation she and her son had the night he was killed.

“He said, 'I love you, mom,'” recalled Brown with a smile. “I told him, 'I love you more.' Then, he would always say, 'OK, I have to go.'”

Hours later, Young’s son was dead.

Police released surveillance video of the suspects.

Young’s stepfather, local attorney Warren Brown, has also announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects. Still, no arrests have been made.

Donyelle Brown said she grew up in Baltimore and is troubled by the violence that’s plaguing the city.

The mother is now calling on the city to unite.

“Put down the guns," said Brown. “Let's show everyone that this city can do it. We can do this. One step at a time.”

“If it doesn’t start with us, it will never change,” she later added. “You can’t keep a closed eye on what’s happening in this city. You just can’t.”

Brown plans to honor her son and help the community by starting a foundation in Cody’s name. The focus will be on providing outlets for youth and community engagement.

Brown added she doesn’t hate the suspects who killed her son but would like for them to come forward.

“They’re not shown what love is,” said Brown. “They’re shown what it is to take a life, and in a way become dehumanized. We need to show them they are someone. They can feel again.”

The mother said she is leaning on her faith and family to carry her through this difficult time.

Cody Young’s funeral will be held at Carter Memorial Church of God in Christ Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The family will accept friends at 9:30 a.m.
