GROUNDED | BWI among airports with biggest percent of flights cancelled
LINTHICUM, Md. (WBFF) - What are the chances that your flight from BWI won't take off? According to a new study, they're pretty high.
BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport was ranked in the top 10 among airports with the biggest percentages of flights cancelled in 2017.
InsureMyTrip, a company based out of Warwick, R.I., released a ranking of the 25 airports with the most percentage of flights cancelled. The numbers are based on the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
About 1.71 percent of BWI flights were cancelled last year, putting the airport in 10th place nationwide, according to a news release.
That was 1,730 flights, out of a total 101,015.
New York's LaGuardia topped the list, with 3.23 percent of its flights cancelled.
Washington, D.C.'s Ronald Reagan Washington National was seventh, and Philadelphia International was 11th.
The study reports that bad weather is the top reason for flight delays and cancellations, and that delays are far more common than cancelled flights.
