BALTIMORE (WBFF) -- According to investigators, in the moments before a school bus crashed into an MTA bus, killing six, it first struck a Ford Mustang.

Shawn Braxton, the driver of the Mustang, says he was struck as he prepared to make a left-hand turn -- and described the moments leading up to the crash.

“When I looked up, the bus was right on top of me and I tried to swerve to get out of the way,” Braxton told FOX45. “By the time I tried to swerve to get out of the way to the right, the impact occurred.”

When asked went through his mind he answered, “Cover up. That’s it, just cover up. Hopefully I’ll live through it.”

Braxton said he was bruised, and concerned for the families affected by the crash.

"You're not going through this alone," he said in a message to the families. "My heart is breaking because of what happened."

After the crash, Braxton says he was helped out of the wreckage by several people.

“I’m proud to be in Baltimore," Braxton said. "I’m proud that people from Baltimore came and helped me out, because you always see the bad stuff that goes on but I’m really happy to be a part of Baltimore because there were a lot of people that helped me get out of my car."

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Baltimore Police Chief Spokesperson T.J. Smith says the school bus was eastbound on Frederick Avenue when it struck the Mustang.

"Once the yellow school bus struck the Mustang it continued eastbound, then struck the pillar at the Loudon Park Cemetery," Smith said in a Tuesday morning briefing. "The bus struck that pillar and then continued eastbound where it went into oncoming traffic and struck an MTA bus on its driver's side and basically ripped the entire driver's side off of the vehicle. It literally looks like a bomb exploded in the bus. It's catastrophic damage."

Of the six fatalities, five victims were on the MTA bus, police said. Investigators believe approximately 13 people were on the commuter bus at the time of the crash.

A total of two people were on the school bus, Smith noted, a driver and an aide. Investigators say the aide survived the crash.
