Names released in Catonsville officer-involved fatal shooting
BALTIMORE CO., Md (WBFF) —
Authorities say an officer working security at a grocery store in Catonsville fatally shot a shoplifting suspect Tuesday morning.
Officials have identified the officer involved as Police Officer First Class McCain of Precinct 8. According to a media release, McCain is a 16-1/2 year veteran with one prior non fatal shooting in 2006.
Baltimore County police spokeswoman Officer Jen Peach said Officer McCain was alerted early Tuesday to a man who stole laundry detergent and related items at a Giant on Baltimore National Pike and Rolling Rd.
The shoplifting suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Christopher Evan Clapp.
Police say the officer went up to the suspect's Lincoln vehicle, with North Carolina tags, when Clapp put the gear in drive and ultimately dragged the officer with his vehicle.
McCain then drew his service weapon and fired into the vehicle, killing Clapp and stopping the vehicle, according to police. The officer wasn't injured.
Officials stated McCain wasn't wearing a body camera, but Peach says investigators are reviewing surveillance video.
She says the department doesn't release races of officers or people shot.
Another man in the vehicle complained of pain and was taken to a hospital.
