POLICE SHAKE-UP | Search underway for new Baltimore police commissioner

BALTIMORE (WBFF) - For the ninth time in 18-years, the city of Baltimore is launching a national search for a new police commissioner, and many city council members are vowing a more thorough review of candidates' tax history.

“Moving forward, the council should require those documents be shared with them when any agency head is coming up,” said Councilman Brandon Scott.

Scott also suggests the city restructure the way the city hires its commissioner, relying on a board to assist in the hiring process rather than leaving the decision solely to the mayor.

Former FBI agent Dr. Tyrone Powers isn’t convinced.

“I think we need to focus on a great commissioner who can dramatically reduce crime, rather than the end-fighting or who gets to choose him,” said Powers.

Mayor Catherine Pugh has yet to indicate how long the search may take.
