Target to close at Mondawmin Mall
BALTIMORE (WBFF) - Target Corporation has announced it will close its Mondawmin Mall store in February.
The store will close Feb. 3, confirmed a spokesperson for the store Tuesday.
"This decision was not made lightly," said Target spokesperson Kristy Welker. "We have a rigorous process in place to evaluate the performance of every store on an annual basis, closing or relocating underperforming locations as needed. Typically, a store is closed as a result of seeing several years of decreasing profitability."
Employees at the Mondawmin Target were notified Monday about the closing.
The store was the first Target to open in Baltimore as Mondawmin Mall struggled to revamp itself and attract new retailers.
City Councilman Nick Mosby said Target cited a "declining profit margin."
He noted Target is one of the biggest recipients of city tax-increment financing and called it "corporate greed at its finest."
