Truck loses 480,000-pound cargo on 695 at Rt. 1, traffic to be affected through Thursday
OVERLEA, Md. (WBFF) - A massive load that fell off a truck has closed the right lane on the outer loop of I-695 near Bel Air Road and is expected to affect traffic through much of Thursday, reported State Highway Administration.
The item, described only as a "power unit," weighs 480,000 pounds, said SHA spokesperson Charlie Gischlar. He said the truck has a permit to carry the item and it is not hazardous, but he did not immediately know what it was.
"This is definitely going to go through the morning rush and will probably go through the afternoon rush," he said about the incident, explaining a crane is needed to remove the item and SHA also has to address related road damage.
Drivers from the Middle River area headed toward Towson are urged to go north on I-95 to west Route 43 (White Marsh Boulevard) and back to the outer loop, to avoid the Route 1 intersection. They were also encouraged to plan for an extra 20 to 30 minutes Thursday morning.
The cargo is mostly on the shoulder and deceleration lane, he said, but some delays are nevertheless expected for people coming in from the Essex/Middle River area.
The ramp to I-95 is still accessible, he said.
