UMD College Park marching band will stop playing 'Maryland, My Maryland'
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WBFF) - The state song, "Maryland, My Maryland," will no longer be played at University of Maryland, College Park sporting events.
The song's lyrics praise the Confederacy, with verses like: "Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum! / She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!"
"As part of the university's efforts to reaffirm our values as a campus community, we are assessing the songs that are played at Intercollegiate Athletic events," said college spokesperson Katie Lawson in a statement released Monday.
"We are suspending the playing of 'Maryland, My Maryland' to evaluate if it is consistent with the values of our institution at this time," she said in the statement.
The song's use by the marching band has been debated for years, and became a controversy in the early 2000s.
