Maryland Moments: Willing hearts find unexpected friendship, feeding the hungry

At the farm, B.J. Radhe is always looking for new ways to help the hungry -- and about a month ago, when Kerry Hamilton found Maple Lawn Farms, a partnership was born.

BALTIMORE (WBFF) -- Kerry Hamilton is a bit of a celebrity in Cherry Hill.

He visits the soup kitchen every Thursday, where there’s no lack of conversation, potatoes or turkey.

On the menu is 12 cases of meat: All for free – and all from one farm.

It comes from Maple Lawn Farms, nestled in 108 picturesque acres on the southern tip of Howard County.

At the farm, B.J. Radhe is always looking for new ways to help the hungry -- and about a month ago, when Kerry Hamilton found Maple Lawn Farms, a partnership was born.

Inside two years Hamilton had two back surgeries, a stroke and a divorce.

“With what he’s been through, he’s definitely relentless and he’s got it in his head he wants to do good for Baltimore,” Radhe says of his friend.

Hamilton was looking for turkeys to bring to his community.

Now, with two truckloads a week, what he found was a willing heart and an unexpected friend.

As difficult as it may be for Hamilton to get anywhere, the path he’s paving is easy -- and 24 miles up the road, those 12 cases of turkey find a new home.

At 60-years-old Hamilton is planning a run for city council.

Until then he'll continue to serve, showing no signs of slowing down.

“I’m waiting for people to catch up,” Hamilton says. “Right now I’m waiting for people to catch up.”
