WORLD SERIES-OFF DAY

NEW YORK (AP) -- The 2009 World Series will be settled in New York. That's where the Yankees and Phillies will play Game 6 tomorrow night, and Game 7 on Thursday evening, if necessary.

Philadelphia kept its title defense alive with an 8-5 victory in Citizens Bank Park last night, but still trails the best-of-seven matchup three games to two headed back to the Big Apple.

The Phils won the series opener in the Bronx before the Bombers backed up a Game 2 win in their home park with two straight victories in Philadelphia.

Game 2 loser Pedro Martinez is scheduled to get the ball for the Phillies tomorrow night.

The Yankees likely will go with Game 3 winner Andy Pettitte on three days' rest. Manager Joe Girardi says he'll name a starter after today's workout.

MLB-CHAMBERLAIN'S MOM/DRUGS

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- The mother of New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain faces up to 20 years in prison when she's sentenced next month on a felony drug charge.

Jackie Standley pleaded no contest Monday to an amended charge of delivery of a controlled substance, according to court records. The 44-year-old Standley was arrested in May after selling a gram of methamphetamine to an undercover officer at her Lincoln residence.

MLB-BLUE JAYS

TORONTO (AP) -- Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells will have surgery next week to repair damaged cartilage in his left wrist. The team says that Wells is expected to be ready in time for spring training.

Wells, who is entering the third season of a seven-year, $126-million contract extension, hit .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs in 158 games last season.

NBA-SCHEDULE

UNDATED (AP) -- All five of the NBA's undefeated teams are scheduled for action tonight, with two of them sharing the same court. Miami will host Phoenix in a matchup of 3-and-0 clubs.

Orlando and Denver also sport 3-and-0 records headed into this evening's games. The Magic are at Detroit and the Nuggets are at winless Indiana.

Boston brings a league-best 4-and-0 mark into Philadelphia to face the Sixers.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The New Jersey Nets say an MRI performed on forward Yi Jianlian confirmed that he has sprained a ligament in his right knee.

The Nets say the 22-year-old from China will begin rehabilitation immediately and there is no timetable for his return.

Yi was injured in Monday night's 79-68 loss at Charlotte.

NFL-CONGRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A key lawmaker says recent court decisions blocking suspensions of two NFL players threaten to undermine progress made in reducing performance-enhancing drug use among athletes at all levels. Rep. Henry Waxman said at a House hearing today that if the court rulings are not reversed, action by Congress may be needed.

The California Democrat has held high-profile hearings on steroids in sports. He says the rulings could make sports leagues' testing programs unenforceable

The NFL had attempted to suspend two Minnesota Vikings players, Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, for violating its doping policy. But last month, a federal appeals court essentially allowed them to continue playing while the players' lawsuit proceeds in Minnesota state court.

NFL-CONTRACT TALKS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell tells The Associated Press he'll participate in the latest round of labor negotiations with the players' union. Goodell says he will be present Wednesday in New York for talks about a new collective bargaining agreement. He spoke to the AP after testifying before a congressional committee Tuesday.

NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith also is to attend Wednesday's session.

The NFL opted out of the collective bargaining agreement last year, although the contract won't expire until after the 2010 season. That season will not have a salary cap under the current CBA, and Smith has said he hopes to have an agreement before then.

The old contract was negotiated in 2006.

NFL-NEWS

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Browns coach Eric Mangini is not offering any details about the team's unexplained dismissal of his friend, general manager George Kokinis. Mangini says the team's decision to move ahead without Kokinis was "difficult, both professionally and personally."

Mangini deflected several questions about Kokinis' stunning departure on Monday. The team has not said if he was fired or resigned. Kokinis was hired in January, two weeks after Mangini became Cleveland's coach.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- No longer needed, kicker Billy Cundiff has been waived by the Cleveland Browns. Cundiff filled in while Phil Dawson missed five games with a pulled right calf muscle. Cundiff made all six field-goal tries for the Browns .

Dawson returned for last week's game against Chicago and had his extra point blocked in a 30-6 loss to the Chicago Bears.

CLINTON, Md. (AP) -- Dan Snyder says his Washington Redskins have "let everyone down." In a rare, in-season interview with reporters, Snyder said at a charity event that the team is embarrassed by its 2-5 start and hopes to turn things around soon.

Snyder has been the subject of much ire from some fans. Signs critical of the owner have been confiscated at recent home games as part of the team's new crackdown on all signs and banners at the stadium.

Snyder was asked about the sign ban but did not address the issue. Regarding the fans, he said: "We've let everyone down, including ourselves, and we know that and we're just apologetic."

NHL-OVECHKIN

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- The coach of the Washington Capitals says he hopes Alex Ovechkin won't be sidelined more than two weeks with an upper-body strain. Coach Bruce Boudreau spoke after today's practice. The NHL's two-time MVP did not take part but was more optimistic, saying maybe he'll come back this weekend.

On Monday, the team said Ovechkin was week-to-week after he was hurt in Sunday's overtime loss to Columbus. Ovechkin had an MRI and was expected to travel with the team while receiving treatment.

Ovechkin has missed only four games -- just two because of injury -- since coming to the NHL in 2005.

NHL-SCHEDULE

UNDATED (AP) -- The NHL offers up a five-game schedule tonight. It includes the defending champion Penguins on the road facing the Ducks. Eastern Conference leader Pittsburgh has dropped five straight in Anaheim.

Elsewhere on the ice, the league-worst Toronto Maple Leafs will be hunting their first home win of the season when they entertain Tampa Bay, Atlanta skates at Montreal and the New York Rangers are at Vancouver.

NHL-COYOTES SALE

PHOENIX (AP) -- Final papers have been signed closing the sale of the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes to the NHL. Notification of the closure was filed Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

In all, the NHL paid about $140 million for the team.

The NHL plans to resell the team, preferably to an owner that would keep the franchise in Glendale, Ariz.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-CINCINNATI

CINCINNATI (AP) -- X-rays show Tony Pike's non-passing forearm is healing nicely, so he'll be able to practice with No. 4 Cincinnati this week wearing a new splint instead of his bulky cast. Pike had a protective plate in his left forearm damaged during a game on Oct. 15 and had it replaced. He's missed the last two games while the arm mends, with sophomore Zach Collaros leading the 8-and-0 Bearcats to wins over Louisville and Syracuse.

Pike had an exam Monday that found the forearm is healing well. Coach Brian Kelly said a special splint was ordered that will allow him to do more things in practice this week. Collaros is likely to start on Saturday at home against 4-and-4 Connecticut.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL-ALL AMERICA TEAM

UNDATED (AP) -- Connecticut forward Maya Moore has become the seventh unanimous choice on The Associated Press' preseason All-America team. She is joined by UConn center Tina Charles, marking the fifth time teammates have been selected to the preseason team, which started in 1994-95. Jayne Appel of Stanford, Jantel Lavender of Ohio State and Monica Wright of Virginia round out the squad selected by a national media panel.

Moore was one vote short of being a unanimous choice last preseason. She helped UConn to a 39-0 record last season, averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 rebounds.
