Baltimore Ravens WR Torrey Smith Talks About Hazing in the NFL

Updated: Thursday, November 7 2013, 09:49 PM EST

It's the story that has been dominating the headlines all week. Miami guard Richie Incognito is accused of bullying and hazing teammate and fellow offensive lineman Jonathan Martin.

There is a transcript of a voicemail reportedly left by Incognito on Martin’s phone that is threatening along with the use of a racial epithet. What we don’t know is the tone of the message or Incognito’s relationship with Martin. By the accounts of many of their teammates, Incognito and Martin were very close.

Baltimore Ravens WR Torrey Smith was asked about the nature of the NFL locker room and if hazing like this is prevalent in the league. The three-year veteran said, “In Baltimore, it would never happen. We have great leadership, and guys are focused on trying to win. If you’re out there focusing on trying to win, then the hazing and little things like that – it doesn’t matter. If you’re going to sit there and bully a rookie who you’re going to need – or keep him up at night hazing him, having them scared to come to work the next day – then how is that person going to help you when you need them?”

Smith did say that he had to endure a rite of passage but it was nothing compared to what is being alleged in Miami. “You’ve got to sing, buy Popeye’s, but that’s it.’ It’s more so about a family atmosphere and welcoming you in instead of tearing you down and trying to isolate you. I don’t get how hazing even brings a team closer. It’s stupid to me.”
