Flooding Hits Recife Prior to USA-Germany Match

Updated: Thursday, June 26 2014, 03:23 PM EDT

Just ahead of the USA-Germany match on Thursday heavy flooding hit Recife. US Soccer is warning fans about lengthy delays due to closed streets.

Reporters on Twitter noted numerous fans were abandoning vehicles and walking through flooded streets to the stadiums. Reports of water up to two feet deep were posted to Twitter.

According to FOX Sports, the field at Pernambuco stadium was soft, but conditions were surprisingly good despite torrential downpours. Heavy rain was falling for several hours prior to the 12 p.m. match.

By 11 a.m. there were no reports of the match needing to be postponed, though FOX Sports noted the heavy rain is likely to slow game play.
