Ray Rice Indicted on Third-Degree Aggravated Assault

Updated: Thursday, March 27 2014, 04:50 PM EDT

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has been indicted by a grand jury on third-degree aggravated assault for allegedly striking his fiance at an Atlantic City casino, rendering her unconscious. The indictment was handed down on Thursday.

"We deny that Ray committed an aggravated assault," Michael Diamondstein, an attorney for Rice told FOX45. "The prosecution dropped the charges against the person who started it. Ray and Janay are still living together, they’re happy and they’re in counseling. Neither one wanted prosecutors to go forward with the case."

Along with his fiance, Janay Palmer, Rice was arrested and charged with simple assault domestic violence in February. A copy of the court complaint summons for Ray Rice, obtained by FOX45 states the Baltimore Ravens running back attempted to cause bodily injury to J. Palmer, specifically by striking her with his hand, rendering her unconscious, at the Revel Casino.

The summons for Janay Palmer, states she committed, "assault by attempting to cause bodily injury to Raymell Rice by striking him with her hand, while at the Revel Casino."

TMZ Sports posted footage they claim is Rice dragging his unresponsive or unconscious fiance out of an elevator in an Atlantic City casino. According to TMZ the video is from just moments after police say they assaulted each other on the property. [WATCH here]

An attorney for Rice told TMZ, "The video that's being posted by TMZ Sports is not the complete event, but is merely the end result of what transpired...We'll assure the public that when this matter is fully tried and completed, you'll have a better understanding of what happened and we ask the public to reserve making any judgment until all of the facts come out."

Steve Bisciotti, majority owner of the Baltimore Ravens, has publicly announced his support of running back Ray Rice, after his February arrest in Atlantic City.

"We have to support him," Bisciotti said, the Ravens reported on Twitter. "I think we'll be rewarded by him maturing and never putting himself in a situation like that again."
