Report: Balfour Deal in Jeopardy

Updated: Thursday, December 19 2013, 09:38 PM EST

Grant Balfour is the Orioles closer for 2014, or is he? Multiple media outlets are reporting that there is a snag in the two-year, $15 million deal.

The concern is around Balfour’s physical. Roch Kubatko of MASNSPORTS.com writes that the deal is in “serious jeopardy” and that Friday’s scheduled press conference will likely not happen.

According to Kubatko, Balfour’s X-ray on his right shoulder is holding up the deal. The 36-year old right-handed closer had shoulder surgery in 2005 and missed the entire ’06 season.

If the Balfour deal does fall through, the closer market got a lot smaller. Both John Axford and Joaquin Beniot inked deals today with the Indians and Padres, respectively. They were considered fallback plans for the O’s if they couldn’t sign Balfour.

The Australian native has been one of the most consistent closer over the past two seasons in Oakland, converting on 62 of 67 saves.

Over the last four seasons with the Rays and A’s, Balfour posted a 2.47 ERA with 64 saves.
