BALTIMORE (WBFF) - In the months since the death of George Floyd police actions, especially ones with deadly consequences, have never been under more scrutiny.
There are some officers who go too far.
But there are also officers who make a split second decision because their life depended on it.
Crime and Justice Contributor Jason Johnson points to Friday morning's deadly traffic stop.
A state trooper was dragged was dragged attempting to make a routine traffic stop.
Johnson says:
You really have no idea what's in a person's mind...
In the current climate it's might be easy to believe an officer had other options.
There is no question this is an emotionally charged issue cities across the country are being forced to not only face but address.
Thirty miles away from Friday morning's deadly traffic stop, thousands of people turned out to bring attention to this issue.
We found between 2015 and 2019 in the State of Maryland 79 people were fatally shot by an officer.
Numbers are harder to come by nationally.
Johnson says:
That's something we need to get better at because it's very difficult no matter what side of the issue you're on...
Despite the data being incomplete Johnson says nationally it appears as if there's been a drop in the number of cases in which an officer used deadly force.
Potential success in policing overshadowed by officers who used deadly force when it was not warranted.
