LEESBURG, Va. (ABC7) — The Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) in Leesburg, Va., reported a COVID-19 case on Sunday and the facility is temporarily closed for cleaning which is scheduled from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
No details were provided on the individual who tested positive for the virus.
Officials say while cleaning is occurring, the ARTCC controllers will work from an alternate location.
Airlines and passengers reported flight delays, according to CNN's Pete Muntean.
FAA officials say its agency has a contingency plan for every air traffic control facility and is positioned to respond to the effects of a COVID public health emergency.
According to the FAA, every ATC facility has a backup plan in case it has to temporarily close and this has been the case for years and is not related to the pandemic.
The agency scheduled COVID cleanings for the overnight hours and officials state controllers are able to work from a designated backup facility, such as an airline ramp tower.
FAA officials say they have reduced the amounts of time facilities remain closed for COVID-19 cleaning from six to eight hours down to one to one-and-a-half hours.
