Project Baltimore found that 13 Baltimore City public high schools had zero students who tested proficient in math this past spring. A Black student advocate says city school officials lack a sense of urgency to address this.

Denisha Allen, founder of Black Minds Matter, said Baltimore City Schools are not serving residents.

“It’s very disheartening to see again that Baltimore City Schools are not doing what’s good for students,” Allen said. “They’re not educating kids.”

Black Minds Matter is a movement to celebrate Black minds and develop high-quality education options for Black students. Allen suggested innovative practices and options for students as the solution.

She advocates for increasing funding for programs that will fund students’ education in other, better districts, if they choose to do so.

Allen also agreed with replacing leadership in city schools to create a top-down sense of urgency to fix the issue.

“We need to disrupt the system,” she said.

The last report showed 23 Baltimore City public schools with zero students testing proficient in math, 10 being high schools, according to Allen. So she says the increase to 13 schools is disheartening.
