BALTIMORE -- WBFF -- Some of the top students in the Baltimore region were honored on Sunday.

570 students from Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region were honored at the 22nd Annual Carsons Scholars Fund Awards Ceremony. The honorees included students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities. They received $1000 scholarships.

Co-founders Candy and HUD Secretary Ben Carson joined in the celebration. Many students also told Fox45 that Dr. Carson is a big inspiration to them. Gabriel Ramos, a high school senior, said that Dr. Carson is a product of the American Dream like he is. Ramos says that he has always wanted to be a physician but because of Dr. Carson, Ramos is considering being a neurologist or a neurosurgeon.

Dakuawn Johnson also discussed how he was first honored in 2005 and how excited he is about attending college. Fox45's Jennifer Gilbert was the emcee for the event, which took place at Martin's West.
